Muscle Shoals is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, and the county seat of Butler County. The population was 18,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Muscle Shoals is located on Mobile Bay, about 15 miles southeast of downtown Birmingham and 30 miles north-northwest of Montgomery. The first known mention of Muscle Shoals was in 1795 when Francis Scott Key wrote about "a place called Muscles" on his Key West voyage to Pensacola, Florida. In 1800, Colonel John Sevier built a mill here which became one of the most important mills in central Alabama until it closed its doors in 1920 due to competition from larger mills near Tuscaloosa and Decatur. The plant still stands as a historical landmark today and can be visited during regular business hours or via guided tours offered by local businesses such as Blue Bottle Brewery and Hometown Grill & Pub (owned by Sam Adams Brewing Company). In 1821, General James Ketchum purchased land here from Colonel John Sevier for $2,500 cash only and began construction on what would become Muscle Shoals Aquarium which opened its doors on October 10th, 1825. The aquarium attracted many influential people including President James Ketchum himself who donated funds for its construction with plans to display fish from all over the world inside it eventually leading to it becoming one of the most famous aquariums in America From its opening until 1920 there were 3 different mayors ruling Muscle Shoals: Arent Cripplebottom (1824-30), Cornelius Vanderbilt (1830-34), and Isaac Newton Phelps (1835-40). During this time period much progress was made here including new churches being built such as First Baptist Church (now Pastor's United Methodist Church) while also new schools were erected like Vestibule School (later Pickwick Elementary School) which served as an elementary school until 1963 before being replaced by nearby Pinson High School which still serves students today During World War II both Black American enlisted men stationed at Camp Beale military airfield near Huntsville along with white American soldiers serving elsewhere served their country side helping turn what would later become Muscle Shoals into an industrial town post war thanks to federal government programs like GIs for Victory Act of 1945 As industries grew more numerous so did jobs opportunities throughout town but sadly some families lost out during difficult times like when Oldsmobile announced they were moving their production line from Monroe County to Tuskegee University Racetrack just outside town makingMuscle Shoals lose some residents jobs that could have easily been filled however overall economically things have stabilized within less than decade since then giving hope for future growth . After years of planning beer manufacturer Sam Adams Brewing Company moved their manufacturing operations directly from Marblehead MA to downtown Muscle Shoals starting up what would become one of Alabama's largest breweries . However recent economic downturn has taken its toll on local businesses acrossAlabama leaving many people feeling abandoned or left without any resources ensuring future growth wont come quite so easily
