For many years, Muscle Shoals was a center of production for the state’s cotton fields. The first settlers to Muscle Shoals were white men from Georgia and Tennessee who fled the Comanche War in 1827. They traveled downriver to find refuge at Muscle Shoals Falls on the Roanoke River. The men built their mills here, and soon enough, other businessmen followed their lead. The area became known as “the Cotton Belt” because of its great quantities of raw cotton. In 1881, white investors organized a company to build a new cotton mill on the site of present-day Muscle Shoals. The company named it Stephenson Cotton Mills after two owners who had financed it: John Stephenson and his brother James Stephenson Jr.. The mill produced large quantities of raw cotton until it closed in 1938 due to World War II prohibition regulations. However, much of the old mill still stands today – including a replica of the original engine house! Muscle Shoals quickly became an important center for education during Reconstruction Period America – with several schools serving both black and white students alike. In 1865, General Robert E Lee visited here while campaigning against Union forces in southern Alabama; he was so impressed by the town that he ordered his army to stop near here for supplies before moving on to Mobile Bayhead two weeks later! After Reconstruction ended, Muscle Shoals reverted back to being just another small farming community until 1955 when it gained city status!
