The first significant settlement in what would become Muscle Shoals was founded by German immigrants in 1811 as Weimarstadt or Weimarerstadt on land that became part of present-day Shelby County. By 1819, John Stephenson had purchased 6,000 acres (2 km²) from Diebold & Co., a group of investors who had formed the First Bradley Navigation Company to exploit Mobile Bayou for shipping purposes. At first known as Muscle Shoals because only white men could quarry there and no black people were employed, Stephen's name was changed to honor General Andrew Jackson when he became president of the United States in 1828. In 1830–31, local residents built a millrace across bayou to power their mills which began operating soon after; this watermill still flourishes today as one of Muscle Shoals' most popular tourist attractions. Muscle Shoals is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Muscle Shoals is located on the Tennessee River and is exit 131 on I-565. The area that would become Muscle Shoals was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Marshall County around 1800. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson and his army passed through this area during their march from Memphis to Chattanooga and were met by General John Covington's Confederate force at Battle of Shiloh near present day Muscle Shoals. After the battle, many refugees followed Jackson's army south to what would become Muscle Shoals where they founded a town called Canonsburg in 1825. In 1830s two men named James West and Jesse Hill established a sawmill at present day downtown Muscle Shoals which became one of the largest mills in Alabama for over fifty years until it closed in 1901 due to Competition from larger mills downstream. The mill was later reopened as a shoe factory but closed again in 1974 after more than three decades of operation%. In 1835, John Covington built a toll road from Nashville downriver to Mobile along the Tennessee River which he named "TheCumberland Road". This road led directly to what would become Muscle Shoals where Colonel John Montgomery developed land east of town for farming purposes which he named "Montgomery Hill". The first post office was established at Montgomery Hill in 1837 with Elisha Saunders serving as the first postmaster. By 1840, there were 10 residents living at Montgomery Hill and 5 rural residents who farmed nearby. In 1845, sales tax began collection within Muscles Hosiery Mill property line so construction could begin on new brick buildings that would house government agencies such as Congressional District Court House (1847), jail (1849), military hospital (1850) and other businesses including stores operated by Samuel Maynard & Brothers grocery store (1857). The structure known today as First Baptist Church was erected between 1848-51 using bricks that had been brought over by boat from Huntsville for use as part of developing that city’s brick industry In 1850–51 another building project began when Amos Sibley hired local builder William Dudley White to erect a schoolhouse on property now occupied by First Baptist Church complex . This addition also served as both court house and jail until 1861 when all cells were moved into new courthouse built just north of downtown . Businesses expanded rapidly during this time with maynard Bros./Samuel Maynard Store becoming “the most important mercantile enterprise west of here” On July 1st 1860 Federal troops burned all but 3 buildings within center square mile inside present day limits of Muscles Hosiery Mill Complex - an act which forever changed downtown Musculars Hoseytown name & logo

The town grew rapidly due to its location at the junction of two major railway lines and its proximity to the famous Muscle Shoals River. The river was used for transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture. The early years of Muscle Shoals were difficult for the town as it had to compete against larger cities in Alabama for jobs. However, with help from General Allen, the town developed into a successful small business community. In 1908, the first electric power plant was installed in Muscle Shoals and since then the town has relied on electricity to help fuel its economy. Today, Muscle Shoals is a thriving community that is home to many businesses and residents who are dedicated to their local community values. The city has been awarded numerous awards including being one of “America’s Most livable cities” by Forbes Magazine in 2006 and 2007.
