Mountain Brook is a town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tensaw-Etchingsville, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1798, General James Wilkinson built his plantation here and named it after Mount Brook in New Hampshire. Mountain Brook was platted in 1837 by John Dorman and renamed for his brother-in-law, Colonel George Hays MountainBrook Station on the Tennessee River. Mountain Brook became an incorporated town in 1907. The community had a post office from 1907 to 1915 and from 1925 to 1959. The original name of the community was changed because of objections from some residents who felt that it would be confusing to call their town "Mountainbrook" when there were several other towns with similar names in Mobile County. The first store in Mountain Brook opened on December 12, 1907 and was operated by Wm Clementson & Sons grocery store. By 1914, the population of MountainBrook had grown to over 100 people and two churches were built – First Baptist Church (founded 1889) and Methodist Episcopal church (founded 1889). A water tower was constructed in 1916 which served as a local landmark until it burned down in 1978. In 1938, surveyors discovered a small coal mine located near present day Mountainbrook Elementary School which led to increased development around the mine including plans for a new shopping center complete with drive-through convenience store/cafeteria/grocery store complex as well as homesites surrounding the mine shafts used for storage purposes only during surface mining days when no traffic was allowed on Main Street within 500 feet of the school house! The Mineowners quickly abandoned these plans due to public opposition but they still remain visible today at mile marker 6A on State Road 21 south of town limits! On October 15th 1959, Voters approved an amendment referendum creating what is now known as "The Township of Mountainbrook" with its own elected township board with three members instead of just one member appointed by the governing body - this change made mountain brook an official Township! As part of this amendment referendum process citizens were also giventhe option not to ratify or approve any changes so long as they posted notice signifying their intent to do so prominently situated inside their township hall before levy nightfall on November 3rd 1959! This ordinance setting forth village formgovernment characterizes mountain brook today more than 60 years after incorporation!
