The community name comes from a stream that flows through it, Moon Brook. In 1870, the Post Office changed its name to Mountainbrook and became an incorporated municipality with a population of 400 residents. In 1930, Mountainbrook had a school system which included ten schools and two academies for girls; one opened in 1921 and the other in 1928-29. In 1961, all but one of the schools were closed due to budget cuts within the government while only one academy still exists today as an evening high school program for students who have had out-of-state opportunities (eastern Kentucky). In 1984, Mountainbrook's annexation into Mobile County caused some controversy because of its small size relative to other areas around Mobile County and allegations that Montgomery County officials were trying to keep MountainBrookido their own personal fiefdom despite having no jurisdiction over it whatsoever

Mountain Brook was founded in 1868 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a mill town on the edge of an anthracite coal mining district in what is now Baldwin County. In 1902, Mountain Brook became one of only two towns in Alabama to be incorporated as a municipality; it remains an unincorporated community today. Mountain Brook's history can be traced back to 1868 when Scots-Irish immigrants arrived in Mobile County and began to settle on farms around what is now Mountainbrooks Hill Road and Hollowcroft Road. The name "Mountainbrook" derives from this early location - according to one source, "the hill upon which they built their homes was named Mount Pleasant because it sloped gently down to a stream that ran through it." The first milltown in Alabama was founded by Scotch-Irish settlers near Cahaba River just outside of Mobile City Limits (now Cross Keys). This early milltown quickly deteriorated due to competition from more established mills and failed attempts at developing infrastructure such as roads and schools; however, its demise did not mean that Scotch-Irish immigrants were unable or unwilling to contribute materially toAlabama's growth during this time period. A second milltown was established about two miles west of present-day MountainBrooks Hill Rd./Hollowcroft Rd., on the banks of the Coosa River near what is now Hawkinsville; this settlement prospered until 1892 when a trolley line connecting Mobile with Birmingham caused most of its businesses to close including the coon hunting ground where mountain brooks once ran wild!
