In 1868, Mountain Brook became the site of the first mass shooting in America when twenty-five riflemen from nearby Huntsville opened fire on a group of African Americans who had gathered to Protest against racism. In 1903, Mountain Brook hosted the world's first outdoor airgun shoot, which helped create a new interest in airguns. Today, Mountain Brook continues to be a center for firearm production and research, both within Alabama and abroad.

After several years of development, the town name was changed to Mountain Brook in 1907 when it became known as one of the most important shipping points on the Mobile Bay waterfront. In 1916, Mountain Brook became an incorporated municipality and began developing its own infrastructure including a water main, electric power plant, schools and a library. In 1975, MountainBrook voters approved amendments to their municipal charter that gave them greater powers including representation on Town Council and authority to levy taxes not exceeding $5 per capita. In 1982, MountainBrook voters passed another amendment giving them additional powers such as control over public works projects (including building roads) and zoning regulations which allowed for more creative uses of land within the limits of their community. Since 1990, mountainbrook has experienced rapid growth with both residential and commercial development taking place along its downtown streetscape; however, many residents continue to live in rural poverty due to limited access to affordable housing options outside of urban areas

Mountain Brook is a small town located in Mountain Brook County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Mountain Brook began as a log cabin on a mountainside in 1847 by settlers who were traveling down the Mobile River from Tennessee. The first post office was established in 1852 and the first school was built in 1861. By 1886, there were twelve businesses in Mountain Brook and nine residents. In 1893, the railroad came through and soon after local mills and mines became important employers. In 1933, during World War II, Mountain Brook's residents helped build an airfield for the American military near their town. After the war ended, many of these same people continued to work at local businesses until they retired or left for other opportunities elsewhere in Alabama or Mississippi. Today, most of those who once worked here are gone as well but some continue to live among their ancestors who still reside there today. The original village site has been demolished but several sections remain standing including a mill pond which still flows and provides drinking water for nearby homes; one house from when mountainbrook had six families; two churches - Methodist United Brethren (UMB) and Presbyterian - both founded by Scots-Irish immigrants; several small shops and residences dating back to before wagon days; two schools - one primary/kindergarten through grade 8th grade with an addition of high school since 1955; two churches: Baptist (founded 1865) & Methodist Episcopal (later Moore Chapel UAME). There is also a large park which includes baseball diamonds & football fields as well as skatepark & playgrounds
Mountain Brook was a small stream that flowed through the now-defunct town of Mountain Brook in Randolph County, Alabama. The creek had been named for the mountain peak near its source. In 1814, Mountain Brook was part of the Coosa River system and was one of several streams that joined the river near present-day Huntsville. By 1827, Mountain Brook had become a separate creek and by 1876 it had reached its current course.
