The local paper mill closed in 1955 but continues to be used as a community center today by Mountain Brook residents and area businesses. One of the largest employers in the town has been Southern Bell Telephone Company which has its main campus located near downtown Mountain Brook.

Mountain Brook is also the location of the annual Appalachian Folk Festival which takes place in late September or early October each year.
