The first mention of Mountain Brook was made by James Bowles in 1799 when he included it among his settlements on the Talladega River. In 1836, John Chapman set up a mill here and began to produce flour for local markets. By 1840, mountain brooks had been designated as tributaries of the Talladega River and milling ceased. In 1907, Mountain Brook became part of Tuscaloosa County after being annexed by neighboring counties. As a result of this annexation, many businesses were closed or moved to new locations within the town limits while others continued to operate out-of-town. However, most residents still live and work within walking distance of their homes or shops along Uptown Avenue and Old Mill Road

It became an incorporated municipality in 1903 and became a city in 1960. The original settlers were Methodist missionaries who came to Mobile Bayou country near Mountain Brook to plant a church and school. They named their new settlement after the brook that ran through their land near Chattanooga, Tennessee—the first such name given to any town or village within Montgomery County. In 1881, the Methodist missionaries also donated land for a public square and cemetery which still exists today on Main Street in Mountain Brook. The first store opened in Mountain Brook on December 5, 1881 by John A. Denton and his brother-in-law J.B. Grimes Sr., two of the early merchants of Montgomery County with stores located at two different locations until 1901 when one location was consolidated into the current store building which stands on present day Main Street between Springdale Avenue and Highway 84A (now I-85). In 1903, MountainBrook became an incorporated municipality under the leadership of Mayor James Hitehill with approval from both the state government and its citizens via referendum held November 16th of that year – making it one of only three cities/towns within Montgomery County to do so at that time; others being Decatur (1893) & Hooverville (1906). In 1960, MountainBrook transitioned back to its original municipality form following passage by then Mayor John Gadsden who stated: “I believe that this community has had more than its share of success story[s] during my term as mayor than our predecessors ever did” Mountain Brook is located at 30°28′41″N 95°49′39″W (30 degrees 28′ 41″ N 95 degrees 49′ 39″ W), just west of downtown Montgomery City proper on Mobile Bayou where itbordersthe city limits to the south while portionsofMontgomeryCity lie beyond those limitstothe north primarily along Springdale Avenue past Johns Hopkins Hospital (); most notably including much suburban development around what is now University Park area east of US-280 about 8 miles SWofMobileBayouand westofthecity limitsadjacenttoDowntownMontgomery
Mountain Brook is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Mountain Brook started as a small farming community located on the eastern edge of what is now Montgomery County. In 1883, John Witherspoon established a mill in Mountain Brook Village and soon after began to produce cottonseed oil and other products. One of the first settlers in Mountain Brook was Mrs. Anna Hutton who came from Scotland in 1827 and built her home on what is now Broad Street. The first post office was established at Mountain Brook in 1881, and by 1890 the village had grown to include a school and several stores. By 1900, the town contained two churches and twelve residences. In 1906, the name of the village was changed to Mountainbrook Station to more accurately reflect its growth as an agricultural center with mills, warehouses, and ranching operations nearby. In 1912, when Birmingham became an independent city under statehood, MountainBrook Station became part of its boundaries; it remained an agricultural center until about 1951 when industrial development replaced agriculture as primary economic activity in that area. The population increased rapidly during this time but declined precipitously during the 1970s recession due largely to competition from larger cities such as Birmingham and Huntsville
