In 1965, the city merged with Montgomery to form Montgomery County. The population of Mountain Brook peaked at over 200,000 in 1990 but has since decreased due to various factors such as gentrification and loss of jobs in manufacturing. Today there are more than seventy businesses located in the city limits of Mountainbrook with over half of them being small businesses or family-owned establishments dating back to before 1990 when the city was an unincorporated community east of I-20 near US 31st Street and US 70th Avenue.

The town started as a post office on May 12, 1836. Mountain Brook has been called "The Gateway to the Great Lakes Region" and "the Jewel of the Great Lakes region." Mountain Brook was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who had come overland from Ireland in 1814. They named their new community after one of their native land's high mountains, Brookvale in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. One reason for choosing this name may have been because there were no other towns or villages within miles of Mountain Brook when it was founded. In 1835, two brothers by the name of Frazier founded a small village near present day Montgomery on a bluff overlooking Mobile Bay and began trading with Native Americans and selling goods such as fish and furs. By 1840, Frazier had relocated his business to what is now Mountain Brook and built a log cabin known as The Hermitage which still stands today. In 1846, David Starr Jordan became governor of Alabama and renamed MountainBrook "Jordanville" in honor of his predecessor. By 1850s, several businesses had sprung up around downtown including a store owned by John Hargrave (later Governor George C Marshall), two hotels – The Post Office Hotel (later called Majestic Theatre) and Idlewild House – two stores (Frazier’s Store & Nailsmith’s Shop), three families who lived on Main Street between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue North - those being Mr., Mrs., & Miss Jane Eagleton - four blacksmiths - Samuel Butterfield (& Sons), James Caldwell (& Son), Solomon Cummings (& Son) - all men; six farmers – five white men & one black man; one schoolteacher – named Sarah A Hargrave; one laborer named Isaac Griggs; fifty-eight wagons used for general transportation purposes only
Mountain Brook is a tributary of the Mobile River in Alabama. The creek was named after a mountain located in that state. Mountain Brook flows through the city of Mobile and its suburbs, including Midtown and East Mobile.
