By 1860, there were ten stores in Mountain Brook with an average of eighty customers per day. In 1881, John Tipton founded Japantown which became one of Birmingham's most popular shopping areas for African Americans during its early years. Tipton also donated land for a school that would accommodate African American students and named it MountainBrook Elementary School after his donation. After many attempts to get money from developer James Meredith for building facilities for black students at Tuskegee Institute (later renamed Alabama State University), Japantown finally closed its doors permanently around 1960 due to lack of support from city leaders and developers alike. In 1954, mountainbrook High School was opened as one of two high schools serving Jefferson County students outside of Birmingham proper; the other being Booker T Washington High School which served whites only until 1971 when all Jefferson County high schools were integrated into Birmingham public Schools under then Superintendent Dr C Marshall's "All=One Campus" program). In 1984 MHS merged with nearby Valley View Elementary School becoming MountainBrook Middle School which continues today as one of sixMiddle Schools providing education through 8th gradeinderry residents within City limits of Birmingham AL

By 1800, Cherokee people had moved away from central Alabama and established themselves on the lower Chattahoochee River near present-day Chattanooga, Tennessee (see also: History of Chattanooga). The Creek nation controlled much of eastern Tennessee by 1800, so when white traders arrived in that region during that time period they may have been seeking Cherokee goods or slaves (see: Trade between Georgia and Tennessee). In 1821, General James H. Creech led Union troops against Confederate forces at Battle of Goodpasture Bridge. After that battle, many Cherokees fled southward towards northern Georgia as refugees; however, few reached safety until after General Creech's death due to a fever contracted while fighting for the Union side at Battle of Appomattox Court House two years later (see: The Battle of Appomattox Court House). As a result of his participation in that battle and subsequent death,[1] General Creech became one of America's most famous military figures.[2][3] As a result of his heroism at Goodpasture Bridge and apposite nickname—Creek—General James H. Creech has often been referred to as "the national hero" throughout America today (See also: Appalachian Mountains).[4][5][6]). Mountain Brook developed primarily because farmers used it as a water source for their crops rather than having access to more important waterways such as Mobile Bayou or Spring Branch River which surrounded larger towns/cities within centralAlabama[7]. In addition to being an important water source for farming purposes,[8], mountain brook also provided transportation routes between settlements along its length[9][10]. This route served both practical and ceremonial purposes[11]: For example, one early account described how mountain brook transported delegates from nearby Tuskegee Institute when it met with representatives from several nearby hamlets during a meeting convened by Governor Robert E."Langdon" Thomson to discuss educational opportunities available in centralAlabama[12]; furthermore,[13] mountain brook also played an important role during religious services held at various settlements along its length every month(s) throughout the late 19th century[14]: For example,[15] on December 5th1889 Reverend John Gorman preached from Mount Zion Baptist Church located approximately 3 miles northwest of present day Montgomery on upper Mountainbrook Creek[16]; upon conclusion he then announced:[17]: "Gentlemen! I am going home".[18] During prohibition era (1930s - 1940s), political corruption occurred all over southern United States including Montgomery County where prohibition was legal; this resulted particularly in illicit activities like bribery and kickbacks taken place by county officials who were trying to enforce prohibition laws
