Mountain Brook is an unincorporated community in Madison County, Alabama, United States. It is located on the north side of Mountain Brook River between Sheffield and Opelika. The mountain stream flows through the community. The first European to visit Mountain Brook was Lieutenant John Smith who explored the area in 1795. He named it for a brook near his home in Virginia which he thought flowed into Great Alabamie Creek. In 1809, General Andrew Jackson passed through this area on his way from Huntsville to Montgomery and called it Rocky Mount because of the high elevation of the mountains around it. In 1814, General James Ketchum established a post at Mountain Brook after being ordered by President James Ketchum to do so by order of Secretary of War William Crawford. In 1820, Reverend Elijah Porter built a Methodist church in Mountain Brook which remain as one of its most popular features today. Two years later, Baptist preacher Samuel Sevier built another church here also known as the First Baptist Church which remains standing today. In 1826, MountainBrook had a population of only twenty-three people but quickly grew with the arrival of two travelers who were looking for new land to settle: George Stephenson and his brother-in-law John Stevens who had become interested in developing what would eventually become Birmingham . The first stores opened up here in 1830 when Fayette Bean started an grocery store and wagon shop on Main Street between Cumberland Pike and Summit Road. By 1840, there were six businesses open along Main Street with three more opening up within ten years including a mill that served as a stop on stagecoach routes coming down from Mobile Bayou northeastward across Alabama to Chattanooga and then Atlanta . In 1845, Methodists erected their third church here after meeting privately at nearby woodshed while they awaited news from Nashville about whether or not they should build their own church there according as plans were being made for that city's future growth . A school was established here in 1850 by Reverend Jno Capps with instruction starting 9 A.M.-4 P M., seven days per week until 1865 when it moved to Knoxville due to enrollment restrictions set forth by state law . An important development taking place during this time period was railroad transportation reaching this region making farming much easier especially given that goods could now be brought downriver instead of having them transported overland like before . This also led directly to increased trade throughout this region creating new jobs and greatly improving economic conditions for all involved . By 1860, there were sixteen businesses operating along Main Street with twelve more opening up within five years including two large mills each producing cloths/linens and hats/caps respectively! At this point things began changing however as larger companies outgrew smaller ones becoming dominant; thus shutting down small local businesses unable or unwilling (or financially unable) to compete against larger organizations constantly expanding into formerly uncharted territory!
