Mountain Brook is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 547 at the 2010 census. Mountain Brook is part of the Mobile–Tensaw metropolitan area. It was named for the brook that borders its community on three sides. The brook ran through the town from east to west before it straightened out and flowed into Mobile Bay. Mountain Brook developed around a blacksmith shop, school and other early businesses in what is now downtown Mountain Brook. After Union General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865, many of the men who had fought for him were taken prisoner or killed, including Mountain Brook's own resident physician Samuel Hance. Consequently, most of the people who constituted MountainBrook during those years were white settlers from surrounding counties who soon began moving into the town to take advantage of its natural resources and good luck with business opportunities. In 1881, when Birmingham became an city Limits to make room for expanding Montgomery County, much of what lay within Jefferson County was annexed by Birmingham as well - including portions of MountainBrook acres that are now known as Fayetteville Park and Midtown Center streets near downtown Mobile proper (the former site of both Highland Park amusement park and Sears department store). As Birmingham grew more populous, so too did demand for space withinJefferson County limits; by 1920 only 2/3 of what once made up MountainBrook had remained within Jeffcoounty boundaries - all but a small slice being annexed by later municipalities such as Homewood (now Tarrant) sprawled across central Alabama like ants crawling over an open door knob while they build their nests elsewhere atop local mountainside coal beds. Since then, much has been done to preserve parts of this historic community - most visibly with construction beginning on Interstate 10 just north of downtown in 1992 following a request by local officials to keep access open for pedestrians and bicyclists whenever development moves along I-10ignored turnouts upstream - although some efforts have been less successful than others: For example, plans have been floated to move Montgomery Elementary School—just blocks away from where much historical activity took place until recently—to new facilities adjacent to Interstate 10 instead; or demolish one entire block contiguous with old homes adjacent (and accessible from) I-10new shopping malls would be proposed if approved by city planners currently responsible for overseeing redevelopment along that stretch of interstate highway outside city limits; finally efforts are underway to establish a "Mountainbrook Corridor" Arts & Culture district linking existing neighborhoods southward via Riverside Avenue through Midtown Center Streets into Fayetteville Park while also creating parking opportunities along I-10exit ramps leading off Riverside Avenue opposite City Hall should developers decide they want more density near I-10 rather than fewer cars per square mile inside city limits). Despite these challenges there has always been potential for revitalization given how well situated town remains relative both geographically and economically compared with nearby cities such as Mobile; recent surveys show that about half or more residents identify themselves as "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in any type of cultural expression near their home within commuting distance--far exceeding levels found among similar residents located elsewhere in central Alabama despite competition generated by larger populations closer at hand which often lack similar amenities or infrastructure supportive thereof...Given these trends it can be argued that even though mountainbocking may continue struggling somewhat economically during tough economic times it still benefits somewhat electorally due largely to continued influxes OF new blood drawn not only from outside but also fromwithin towns throughout central Alabama each successive decade since 2000 when Moberg Township formally rejoinedJefferson County...As things stand today mountainbocking residents remain highly engaged politically particularly given historically low voter turnout rates generally observed among African Americans statewide notwithstanding special election gains occasioned BY redistricting initiatives enacted BY state legislature prior TO2010)...Despite all these challenges there seems little reason not believemountainboking will remain another vibrant community thrivingdespite current economic setbacks until major changes occur locally& nationally(e.)
Mountain Brook was first settled in the early 1800s. The name of the creek comes from a mountain near its mouth. The creek was later renamed after General Andrew Jackson and his family. In 1824, Mountain Brook became part of Alabama Territory. In 1830, Mountain Brook was drained by the works done by Lieutenant Colonel John Crampton on behalf of the Alabama Legislature to improve drainage in that territory.
