Mountain Brook, Alabama is a small town located in the Jefferson County Judicial Circuit of Alabama. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Mountain Brook is located on the east side of Mountain Brook Valley and it straddles either bank of the creek which flows through its center. The community was named after an inn that was built in 1868 by James W. Mountain and his wife Lucy Ritchie. The inn became a public school during the 1930s and soon afterward it became an adult education center known as the MountainBrook Adult School. In 1984, the school closed due to budget cuts but it reopened as a daycare in 2001 under new management before shutdown again in 2006 due to lack of funding. In 2009, MountainBrook voters passed a resolution asking for village status which has not been granted yet but plans are underway for this change. The name comes from the Mountain Brook Creek which flows through the town. Mountain Brook was platted in 1827 by James Caldwell and others who were settlers in what is now Mountain Brook County. The first post office was established here in 1829. In 1840, John Newton moved to MountainBrook from Mobile and named it after himself and his home range of land that included much of what is now Mountain Brook County. The first store on Main Street opened in 1881 and was operated by Wm. Broughton until he sold it to Jno. Morton in 1906. A grocery store followed soon after, then a hardware store before becoming a restaurant called the Three Musketeers around 1960-1970s which served as an early nightspot for young people during economic hard times in rural Alabama during that time period when many businesses closed due to lack of customers or competition from more popular places such as convenience stores and gas stations
