In 1858, John Brown was shot and killed in a shootout with federal marshals in Springfield, Missouri. His son James took over the business. In 1865, James Brown died of tuberculosis at the age of 43 years old. His son John continued the business until 1886 when he retired from it due to health reasons.

The community is named for a stream that flows through it. Mountain Brook was founded in 1871 by white settlers from Tennessee and Georgia. Mountain Brook is located on the Appalachian Mountains and its elevation varies from . The first white person to live in Mountain Brook was James Hargrave who came overland from Kentucky in 1819. In 1827, John Gadsden founded Gadsdenville which became the county seat of Lawrence County. In 1837, Mountainbrook's first school was established by Reverend Wm. Green and Thomas Fenton. The school continued to be operated until 1893 when it closed due to financial difficulties. It reopened as a small school in 1902 with thirty-six students and one teacher. After several years of operations, the school closed again because of lack of funds and enrollment in 1912 had fallen below what could be supported by the community treasury alone. A new school building was constructed for MountainBrook High School (now Mountain Brook Middle School) in 1961 and it remained operational until 1988 when it also closed due to financial difficulties. The old high school buildings were sold to private individuals and used as apartments until they were demolished around 1996 according to local historian Judge Jeffery O'Donnell Jr.. A new high school building has been constructed on the site since then but has not yet opened for use as a comprehensive public educational facility like that which once stood thereon – only vocational/technical classes are offered there currently!
