In 1960, Mountain Brook integrated with nearby Homewood to become one municipality. The first white settlers in Mountain Brook were Methodists who arrived from Kentucky in 1834. They developed a small cottonwood plantation near present-day Mountain Brook and named their new settlement afterBrooklyn, Tennessee (then part of Virginia). After several years of growth and development, the Methodist Missionaries organized a church on the mountain top in 1840. By 1860, more than 60 percent of the population had black ancestry and half of all businesses were run by blacks or their descendants. In 1960, when Birmingham consolidated with other municipalities to form the metropolitan area, Mountain Brook joined Homewood as one municipality within that larger community. As an African American majority city throughout most of its history—even as it experienced significant white flight during the late 20th century—MountainBrook has been sensitive to both its black residents' needs and efforts to integrate into white society as best he could while still maintaining some degree of cultural specificity. Today's racial tensions are generally lower here than they are elsewhere in Jefferson County due largely to generations old segregated practices dating back to when race was not considered an important factor in economic or social life hereabouts; today's residents view themselves as two separate but interconnected entities within our larger society without any true understanding or control over that outcome despite persistent attempts by some groups seeking otherwise
