Mountain Brook was once one of the most important transportation and trade routes in Alabama. It was also a center of cotton production. Mountain Brook is located in northwestern Baldwin County, about 20 miles east of Mobile, and is bordered by Bellefonte to the north, Holmes to the northeast, Montrose to the east, and Sheffield to the south. The creek has its source at an elevation of 780 feet above sea level on U.S. 17 just west of Mount Vernon Peak in Baldwin County. They named this area Santa Elena de la Sierra because they found a high mountain peak called Santa Elena (Elena) looming over their path.
