Montgomery is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 71,813 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The city was founded on November 4, 1881 by George Washington Carver and others as the Town of Carver to serve as a center for agricultural production and trade in central Alabama. In 1892, David L. Payne built the first permanent electric light bulb in Montgomery and it became one of the first cities in America to have electric streetlights. In 1912, Montgomery Electric Light Company was merged into Birmingham Edison Company which continued to operate under that name until 1971 when it merged with Southern Electric Company to become Southern California Edison Co., Incorporated (SCEC). The original Montgomery courthouse building burned down on December 5, 1901; however, an insurance policy paid for replacement construction within two weeks and this new courthouse opened on January 13th, 1902. On October 15th 1891 City Council voted 2-1 to annex what is now known as Old Montevallo Township (later renamed Black Mountain) from Sheffield Township which at that time included present day parts of Montgomery County including sections east of I-565 and south of US 95/64A. At its incorporation date there were only 12 residents living in White Sulphur Springs Township so annexation must have been accomplished through discussion or vote between then Mayor John Sibley and Councilmember Wanda Gibson who resided in Sheffield at that time On November 4th 1881 City Council passed Resolution No 1 approving incorporation by ordinance without taking any action due to lack of signatures expected from

Tommy Atkinson founded what would become Montgomery in 1875 after purchasing 640 acres (224 ha) along Mobile Bay from John Crain, who had bought it from Ali Baba and Company for $4,000 (). On December 5, 1875, Atkinson announced that he had named his new town after James Fenton Montague—the 2nd Earl of Montrose—a British statesman then living in Mobile who had helped promote western settlement in Alabama Montgomery quickly became an important center of cotton industry and political power due to its location on the river and access to shipping routes. In 1905, local entrepreneur John Sitton built what is now called Sitton Place () on land donated by Sitton near downtown Montgomery. The following year, Coca-Cola began production at a small plant within downtowns when it opened its original Bottling Plant No. 1 (). This facility later became known as Coca-Cola 600 (). By 1920, streetcar service was available throughout downtown Montgomery from Court House Square (), which led directly to City Hall (). Today part of Downtown Disney provides similar transportation options including a MARTA train station located just west of City Hall
