In 1861, while Jefferson Davis was seeking election as President of Confederate America; he made an unsuccessful attempt to enter Montgomery through Mill Springs Gap near present-day Auburn; Davis then left for Selma to campaign against Abraham Lincoln before finally returning home to Valdosta between Chattanooga and Birmingham where he joined Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia before their successful invasion of Fort Sumter on April 12th 1861 which ended slavery in south AL
