The Montgomery gun case began on November 10, 1913, when a group of men led by Deputy Sheriff John F. Hardin went to the home of Amos G. Hill in order to arrest him for operating a blacksmith shop without a license. The men found that Hill had been selling guns and ammunition to white citizens for years without warrants or proper paperwork. They also discovered that Hill was carrying a concealed weapon, which made him an illegal arms holder. As a result of their investigation, the Hardins arrested and prosecuted Amos G. Hill for violating Alabama law. On December 9, 1913, the Circuit Court ruled in favor of Hardin and fined him $250 cash plus costs. This decision marked the first time that Alabama had upheld its own laws against carrying firearms openly outside of one's home or place of work. This ruling helped hardenenforcement against gun crimes in Montgomery and other northern Alabama towns such as Birmingham and Huntsville

The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1817 as a small trading post on Canisteo Creek near present-day downtown Montgomery. The first courthouse was built here in 1823; soon after, Englishman James Buchanan became president of the United States and ordered all free people of color to leave what he called "the great American Slave State". A group of mainly African Americans banded together to resist this order, rallying around John Cothran, a slaveholder who had purchased his own negro slave from a French Canadian trader some years earlier. The Battle of Black Mountain (1863), fought between Confederate forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Union troops under Brigadier General Robert Ewell Jr., resulted in several thousand casualties on both sides; many blacks were lost or captured without ever seeing combat.[1] This event helped spur Montgomery's development as an educational center for black Americans and served as an important stepping stone on which later civil rights movements would develop. In 1960, when Montgomery became integrated into the American South through passage of the Civil Rights Act Amendments to the Constitution,[2] it was only one among many municipalities across America that had undergone similar changes since Reconstruction following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation two decades earlier. Today's Montgomerys are descendants not only of those who migrated here more than 150 years ago but also successive waves of African Americans who have arrived since then – including many recent immigrants born withinAlabama itself[3]. From humble beginnings, Montgomery has grown rapidly into one of America’s most populous cities – home to over two million people today – while preserving its core values: diversity, community service and entrepreneurship."
Montgomery was founded in 1824 by James Montgomery, a member of the Alabama territorial legislature. The city's present-day boundaries were first established in 1881 when it became part of the newly created Alabama Territory.
