In 1839 Charles Goodyear founded what would become Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company on North College Street with two acres (0.8 km2) of land he had purchased from Jabez Moore.[4][5] Goodyear soon became an important player in local politics and commerce, serving as mayor (1878–82), delegate to state constitutional conventions (1884–88), secretary of state (1902–05) and governor (1911). He also served on both boards of public works created during Reconstruction—a time whenAlabama experienced significant social change following its defeat by Confederate forces during the Civil War. When Andrew Johnson became president in 1868 he appointed Goodyear Collector at Large for Washington Territory – an office he held until his death in 1901. In 1886 John Wesley Powell led a surveyor party through central Alabama that documented what would become Hoover Dam.[6] As early as 1870s white supremacists had organized secret societies intent upon limiting Negroes' opportunity within society while maintaining their separate racial status quo under state law. These groups were known as "The Invisible Empire" or "Citizens' League for Harmony".[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] During Reconstruction there were sporadic Klan chapters throughout Alabama but they did not gain momentum until after Reconstruction ended due to lack of response from government officials - primarily because federal troops remained stationed throughout mostoftheSouthaftertheendofReconstruction

In 1857, John Brown had tried to assassinate President James K. Polk in Wichita, Kansas. He was shot and killed by U.S. marshal George Armstrong Custer during a shootout at the OK Corral that followed. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, African Americans continued to face discrimination and violence until they were granted full civil rights by Congress in 1964.
