In 1947, a new ordinance governing firearms ownership was passed by the City Council; this ordinance limited handgun sales within city limits to citizens who had a valid gun license or registration card from their county sheriff's office

Montgomery became an important military base during both Confederate and Union wars; it served as headquarters for generals such as Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S Grant before becoming an increasingly large city during Reconstruction period starting in 1877 until it lost its status following passage of Jim Crow laws (which segregated all races) in 1965 which continue to this day
