During World War II, black soldiers from nearby Birmingham were used to garrison duty at Camp Forrest near downtown Montgomery for white military personnel assigned to fight in Europe. As part of his wartime plan to integrating America's armed forces, General George Custer ordered all black troops stationed in north-central Alabama be disbanded on July 4th, 1945. As a result of this policy change, most black veterans who remained in Montgomery faced discrimination throughout their lives until they finally received their full rights under U.S. law following Reconstruction in 1865
