The town that would become Montgomery was founded by James Bowie in 1819 as a trading post on Mobile Bayou near what would become modern day downtown Montgomery. In 1835, John Marshall laid out a township for white settlers on land that now includes much of central Montgomery business district today known as Montgomeryshire Square In 1839 David Ralston purchased land at what is now 5th Street NW and Gaylord Avenue NE from James Bowie to build what would eventually be known as Ralston Barracks – home to both military forces during World War II and later to local governments including City Hall before being sold to The Coca-Cola Company in 1965 In 1881 King George Washington was visiting Birmingham when he stopped off at Ralston Barracks for lunch then rode back into town on his horse White House followed by General Armstrong who presented him with a rifle with which he shot an animal while inspecting troops barracks . After this event Governor Thomas Fenton decided that Montgomery should be its own municipality In 1907 Maud Moore bought 1/2 acre (0 hectares) south of present day Denny Road NW for $3 from Jens Ludwigsen for $10 per acre (1/4 hectare). She named her property Mount Pleasant after her brother Walter Moore who had died years earlier while fighting under Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican–American War Moore built three homes: One she lived in until her death in 1935; two were used as office buildings between 1911-1920; and the last house became home to Welsh schools until it was destroyed by fire in 1970 . A plaque located next door to this building still reads “Maud Moore School”
