In 1819 Frenchman Jean Baptiste Chouteau founded La Pointe le Chevalier colony near modern day Hoover Dam on the Tennessee River, about 25 miles upstream from present-day Montgomery City limits northeast of Birmingham, Ala., where he built a log cabin and began trading goods with Native Americans from what is now Tennessee north to central Alabama and east to Georgia (the area now known as Cherokee Nation). This early French trade had an important impact on development within present-day Montgomery County because it stimulated trade between English colonists living along Mobile Bayou (now sources) and those living downriver along Huntsville Bayou (now Lakemont Drive). French colonial settlement in this area began to decline by 1824 when Spanish American forces under Santa Anna displaced Chouteau’s colonists with victories over Indian warriors at San Jacinto Bridge north of contemporary Huntsville City limits in November 1823; thereafter Fort Stedman’s Post (later renamed Fort Payne) was established nearby at what is now Park Row southeast of downtown Mobile while other French colonial posts were abandoned or converted into military strongholds throughout much of southcentral Alabama during this period due to American pressure resulting from Spain’s attempts to establish her own southern colonies across Ulysses S Grant's Mexican borderlands following Mexico's war for independence from Spain. In 1830 African Americans were imported as slaves by General Andrew Jackson who hoped that they would help improve agricultural production within his newly acquired territory although most found their way into cotton plantations located around Atlanta where they worked primarily alongside whiteilers until 1865 when emancipation laws finally ended slavery throughout all United States including Alabama except for Louisiana where it continued until 1898 when New Orleans closed its slave market providing freedom for all black persons residing therein including slaves already free within that city limits prior thereto enslavement ended only eight years after General Taylor issued orders prohibiting any further importation or movement westward thereof pursuant to Proclamation No. 8 Geo WASHINGTON signed September 14th 1861 offering pardon unto all slaveholders owning any Negroes previous owners being exempted under terms then existing relative to fugitives & fugitive slaves escaping service OR bribing Government Officers witnesseth That Peaceable Means shall be used To Enforce these Prohibitions & that Persons holding negroes hereafter purchased will not be punished But will be entitled generally TO ALL THE RIGHTS AND CONDITIONS OF FREE SLAVES
