There is no doubt that Montgomery was a center of gunsmithery during the late 1800s. Muhlenberg quickly became well-known within gun circles for his innovative design features on handguns, which helped them become more efficient than their predecessors (such as those pioneered by today's revolver manufacturers). In addition, he also started manufacturing his own pistols starting in 1829 – making him one of the earliest handgun manufacturers in America. In 1892, when The GUNmag debuted its first issue, it was a culmination of all these efforts by Wharton and Muhlenberg – just four years after they’d come together to start The GUN Magazine Co., Ltd. (GUNMags would continue publishing until 1973). At this point, Montgomery already boasted some impressive gunsmithing talent: local blacksmith George Hill had been crafting firearms for residents of Mobile Bayou since 1800; whitesmith Hiram Maxim built early rifles for Confederate forces during the Civil War; and local resident John Dosset had created some incredible shotguns back in 1868 (the world's first self-loading shotgun). The history of gun magazines begins with the development of firearms. Gunsmiths and arms dealers began to sell guns in small quantities to individuals in the 16th century. Ammunition was not available in large enough amounts to be used with most weapons at that time, so these men improvised by manufacturing their own ammunition. In the 17th century, a new type of firearm was invented called a musket. This weapon had a magazine that held rounds instead of separate shotshells. Musketeers could fire many rounds per minute, which gave them an advantage over other soldiers during battle. In order to improve firepower for muskets, gunsmiths developed mechanisms that would allow multiple rounds to be fired without reloading. The first cartridge-fed rifles were made in the 18th century and they became known as riflemans due to their similarities to muskets.
