The Montgomery Advertiser was a daily newspaper in Montgomery, Alabama from 1887 to 1975. It was founded by George A. Jones and published at the corner of Queen and Second Streets. The paper was acquired by the Hearst Corporation in 1951. Hearst Corporation merged with the Tribune Company in 1977, which then merged with the Phoenix Newspapers chain in 1980 to form the Tribune Publishing Company. In 1990, Tribune Publishing Company was spun off into its own company, Time Warner Books Inc., which continued to publish the Montgomery Advertiser under that name until it folded in 1995.
Montgomery is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 205,394 as of the 2010 census. Montgomery is the downtown district and commercial center of the metropolitan area that includes Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. The area around Montgomery has been inhabited by the Creek and Chickasaw people for over three centuries. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson appointed John Ross as commissioner to explore eastern Alabama following his victory at Horseshoe Bend in 1812. Ross reported back to Jackson that many Creek villages were destroyed by Federal troops during the war with Mexico, including one called Montevallo. General Jackson ordered General Robert Ewell to occupy Montevallo and remove all Indian inhabitants before winter could begin. In 1832, President Andrew Johnson awarded land in present-day Montgomery County to James Mclntyre for his services in the American Civil War (1861-1865). Mclntyre had been captain of Company K, 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment under Ulysses S. Grant during the Battle of Shiloh on April 6–7, 1862. On July 5, 1865, while general John Custer was leading his cavalry into battle against Native Americans at Little Bighorn near Mount Rushmore National Monument northwest of Montgomery, he was fatally wounded by Indians; this event is known as Custer's Last Stand or Agincourt Ridge Incident. After Union forces overran Confederate territory in 1865 they burned most of Mobile and other nearby towns before withdrawing southward across Chickasaw Nation lines into Tennessee
