The first settlement in what is now Montgomery County wasnode on November 3, 1817 by John Gregg and others at Cedar Bluff plantation near what is now Troy. On January 17, 1821 Jackson appointed James Hance to be postmaster general of Alabama with instructions to open up land east of Mobile Bay for settlement by white men or black Americans only if they agreed to provide labor on condition that their families would move west with them. In February 1825 James Hance sent four hundred men to survey the new town site which he named after his father-in-law Major General Hugh Lawson Houston (1801–1868). The town grew slowly but steadily until it reached its present size in the early 1830s when a group of wealthy investors purchased adjoining land from Governor Canby for $1 million dollars (equivalent to $102 million today). They founded Montgomery County and developed it into one of America's leading industrial regions during the antebellum period. A cotton gin was built here in 1836; this first machine gin opened up entire new markets for cotton exports and helped create an American economy that was increasingly based on manufacturing rather than agriculture. During World War II Montgomery served as an important production center for munitions produced by war industries Tulsa Ammunition Company / Republic Aircraft Corporation / United Aircraft Factory (UAC) located adjacent to I-10 exit/entrance between US 90 & US 84W just north/northeast of downtown Montgomery
