In 1825, General John C. Montgomery was given the command of the Alabama Regiment in order to quell a slave uprising in that state. The massacre at Fort Smith in 1836 led to Montgomery's promotion to army general and his appointment as governor of Alabama. As governor, he protected civil rights and failed to prosecute any of the perpetrators of the Fort Smith Massacre. In 1857, he also became a U.S. senator from Alabama with passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
