Montgomery is a town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded by General George Custer on October 1, 1871 as the town of "Custerville". The name was changed to Montgomery in 1907 after the merger of two other towns: "Montgomery" and "Emmett". The first permanent settler in what is now Montgomery was Captain John Surry who arrived in 1763. He and his family were among the earliest white settlers in what is now Montgomery County. Other early settlers included Captains Benjamin Banneker, Nicholas Harned, James Robertson and others. By 1800 most of what is now Montgomery had been organized into three villages- Eutaw Springs, Watkins Mill and Monterey Bend- with Surry as their leader or founder. In 1807 Daniel Boone traveled through this area on his way to found Clarksville near Roanoke Rapids. The first courthouse in what is now Montgomery County was built on Shaw Avenue (now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard) in 1827 by Judge John Marshall Greenough. This courthouse served as a model for all subsequent courthouses throughout the county until it burned down in 1905. In 1865 Confederate general Robert E Lee's army invaded Mobile Bay frompeninsula across Mobile River to enter Alabama and begin its march upriver to Chattanooga where they would winter before invading Tennessee overland later that year. On April 12, 1865 Union general Ulysses S Grant landed at Port Royal Cove on Anacostia Island off Baltimore Harbor and began an amphibious assault against Confederate forces ashore under Major General Andrew Johnson which failed due to bad Weather conditions followed by an abortive land invasion attempt four days later when heavy rains delayed the boats landing troops under General Joseph Hooker instead camping outside of present day downtown Montgomery renamed Fort McAllister today’s Fairmount Park). In 1865 there were more than 200 black African American soldiers serving with Union Army/Navy forces including privates Augustus Childs and Reuben Foster who fought at Port Royal Cove during that fateful April 12 assault; these brave men are buried at Arlington National Cemetery nearby overlooking Jones Beach A new courthousewas built between 1901-1902 by architect Edward Lathrop Pogue just east of downtown on Washington Street originally called “Pogue Courthouse” but then shortened to its current name because construction costs exceeded original budget so a new wing (northwest corner) became known as “Lathrop Wing” following death of architect Mr., Mrs., & Children of namesake Edward Lathrop Pogue who also designed many famous buildings such as Madison Square Garden & Harvard University Library addition added - this wing forms much today’s historic core of Downtown Montgomery still retaining some Federal architecture features like recessed ceilings (a trait typical found only within Federal Buildings & Military Installations), fine stone detailing (eastern section has single Windowsills below arches each windowill having 4 Ionic capitals trimmed with chamfered edges defining Illusion effect), detailed entablature details etc… Today one can walk right past it if you don't mind lots of fine brick dust! Also note Mound House next door also part of same development which may have been built concurrently with earlier Courthouse complex although no record exists thereof nor does anyone know for sure… All told it constituted one massive building project taking place largely unobserved behind walls Of high masonry exterior walls 8 feet thick! A true engineering marvel its cost appearstodaymay be estimatedat $3 million dollars+ mistake made along way? But overall very impressive!! Finally after years both structure & ornamentation changing hands numerous times thruout ensuing decades finally being returned back home to citizens ownership& Renovation beginning late 1990's…. After all these years recent restoration efforts are finally underway once again bringing old Courthouse back online for use once again!!! As you can see hereinabove various aspects relatingto Montgomerys history virtually EVERYTHING has changed OR COSTLY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS!! So much for history being static!!
Montgomery was founded in 1819 as the seat of government for the Alabama Territory, and it became the capital of Alabama in 1829. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century, becoming an important commercial and military center. In 1907, Montgomery became a state capital and has been its current location ever since.
