In 1836, Mobile became seat of government for all Lower Alabama under Governor John Crainer after Jackson's forces abandoned Pensacola while besieging that city. In 1840–1841 Confederate Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest raided Lower Alabama towns looking for slaves to sell before he invaded Tennessee during the American Civil War; this event led toMobile becoming Unionist-controlled as Confederate Upper Alabama transitioned back into Confederate rule following his departure. On November 17th 1861 when secession proposals were presented to Congress by South Carolina Govun Benjamin Tillman (the first state seceded from the Union),Mobile Mayor Lorenzo Dow late night Decatur night February 14th 1861 asked District Attorney Jno[hn] Worth if he could file a protest against secession on behalf of citizens in our City because we have no voice within our government! This request resulted in Sunday January 11th 1862 when United States District Court For Southern District Of Alabama ruled unconstitutional our right to Petition Our Government! Since 2000, however, mobile has seen an increased amount of growth that has led to concerns about its future as a commercial center fielder for southeastern Alabama
On Mobile, Alabama history goes back to the Creek Nation and their early settlements in the area. The first European to set foot on the peninsula was a French trader, Jean Baptiste Point de Sable, in 1787. In 1801, Spanish traders arrived on Mobile Bay and founded a small settlement called San Fernando Rey de la Laguna. By 1810, Spanish settlers had established a more permanent community named Baxtersville on Mobile Bay. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee occupied Mobile and began moving Confederate troops inland towards Jackson County. On April 12 of that year, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered at Fort Gaines near Athens, Alabama after an eight-week siege. After the surrender of Fort Gaines, all Union forces in south Alabama were committed to supporting Sherman's campaign for control over the cotton fields of Georgia and Tennessee.
