Mobile, Alabama is a town in Marshall County, Alabama. The population was 5,832 at the 2010 census. Mobile is located on the Mobile River and became a town in 1834. It was named for French explorer and missionary Jean Baptiste de Mobile. The first permanent settler in Mobile was Nicholas Capps who came from England in 1795. He founded what would become Jacksonville on the site of present-day downtown Mobile. In 1824, John Thornton erected a sawmill on the confluence of the Mobile and Tennessee rivers which became one of the largest mills in America. By 1830, Mobile had over 100 residents and by 1840 had reached its peak as an agricultural center with cotton plantations, bacon factories, cheese plants and other businesses dotting its landscape. But like most boomtowns during this period of American industrial growth,Mobile soon began to experience economic decline as manufacturing moved out to larger cities or countries while agriculture lost favor as new methods were developed for harvesting crops more efficiently or using less water resources. In 1851 secession led toAlabama becoming one of two Confederate States of America; Mississippi followed suit soon after. As per state law then in place, all white males over 21 were required to register with the Confederate government for military service; thus many men from Mobile found ways to avoid being drafted or registered even though their homes lay within Union lines. Unable to find work anywhere else inside Confederacy, many mobileians turned themselves into bounty hunters looking for Union fugitives - an activity that continued until 1863 when General Nathan Bedford Forrest's forces destroyed all vestiges of production in Mobile Bayou following their successful raid on Charleston Harbor). With no industry left standing except subsistence farming (fishing and hunting being principal sources of income), many locals banded together forming small farmers' associations known as "The Roundheads" because they wanted regulation/control over their own lives rather than dependence upon outside forces (eager individuals today can still learn about early music & dance festivals held around downtownMobile during late 1800’s & 2000’s) Eventually cotton production collapsed due to increased competition from synthetic fibers coming off newly built railways overseas while malaria killed thousands of local Africans working on plantations; also diseases such as yellow fever ran rampant throughout much of southeastern United States during this time period making travel difficult if not impossible without risking exposure As whites increasingly arrived from abroad seeking opportunities far beyond those available back home – including investments in transportation companies such as railroads – opportunity arose for blacks buying land outside white society's grasp leading some people called "The Black Oddity" because they constituted only 10%+of total black population living within white society limits . Migration started slowly but steadily increasing through African American boatmen Carryings goods downriver linking up with traders along Gulf Coast before setting sail upriver again reaching Jacksonport about 1830 then New Orleans about 1840 where freed slaves lived until 1865 This process accelerated when various Acts passed by Congress authorizing slavery were signed into law by Ulysses S Grant - opening up areas formerly restricted under Thirteenth Amendment - creating new markets for slave labor while depriving black Americans outright access to property rights Efforts underway since 1850 among whites (led primarily by anti- abolitionist groups)to reopen area closed off by Union troops resulted ultimatelyinredemptionofall Blacks living withinUnion Territory& eventual admissionofAlabamaintotheUniondespiteprotests
