By 1840, there were over 100 residences in mobile and it had become a major port for goods coming into Southwest Florida via the Gulf Coast shipping route. During World War II, mobile played a critical role as one of America's naval bases during Operation Neptune's Spear while harbouring warships including USS Alabama (BB-57), USS Pensacola (PF-8) and USS Arizona (BB-58). After hostilities ended in 1945, many wartime jobs that went unfilled left mobile resulting in significant decline of population during late 1990s until 2000 when it started to rebound with new businesses starting up throughout downtown area giving it another chance for rebirth In recent yearsmobile has seen some construction projects like Riverwalk Bridge which will connect downtown with riverfront areas north of town as well as new high school/middle school buildings being built along University Boulevard making it more accessible to residents According to most estimates since 2000 mobile's population has rebounded by 10% or more making it one ofAlabama's fastest growing cities
