The history of Mobile began with two Frenchmen named Pierre-Jean de la Fayette and Jean Baptiste LaFayette who landed on what is now Mobile Bay on Saturday, January 8th 1785 while exploring new land that lay between Spain's Louisiana colony and British America's Georgia colony . Their landing set off a chain reaction that led to more than 350 other Frenchmen coming ashore over ensuing years as Acadians (New France) settlers arrived in response to LaFayette's call for assistance against Spanish forces under Governor Manuel de Francia. In 1802 Englishman James Kenedy purchased 2 square miles (4 km²) of present-day Mobile Bay from its original Spanish owners for $1 per acre (.25/.50). When he took up permanent residence there in 1804 his name became part of American history as did that of his successors as perpetual protectorate holder over much of southern Alabama until after World War II when it reverted back to Spanish control following their defeat by United States forces in 1898 during Mexican–American War hostilities along US soil. With European Americans no longer present or dominant enough numerically throughout much of this area since before then African Americans were also brought into contact with colonial culture through slave trade activities carried out by coastal traders which ultimately affected all aspects of social life within what are today known as black Belt counties across both rural/ agricultural areas northward while still being largely majority white until recent decades due largely Interstate migration patterns that have had a profound impact on demographics overall within these traditionally Hispanic/Catholic strongholds while continuing traditional patterns whereby most whites reside near major urban concentrations – especially downtowns – while minorities live mainly outside those concentrated areas although some have begun moving back into older neighborhoods as gentrification has become more prevalent among Latinos generally but also Asians/Pacific Islanders living scattered amongst various ethnically diverse enclaves scattered throughout various parts… During Reconstruction period after Civil War many Germans moved into Mobile because they were expelled from Ohio Valley states such as Indiana, Illinois and Michigan during Union occupation; following collapse of Union cause most went South where cotton plantations were established Most died working intense labor gangs picking cotton rather than developing schools or getting goodutations farming rich soils like blacks did in North Carolina immediately prior Revolution leading directly to large German community (Anzahl waren zwischen 1870 und 1880 ca.(2500)) having access only limited education opportunities standard food items available at plantation stores mostly pork products which led eventually only very few families becoming lawyers etc., way below status enjoyed by Northern blacks who quickly assimilated into mainstream society Many prosperous men owned plantations including John Hance Sr., Captain John Hance Jr., George Washington Carver Sr., Julius Rosenwald
Mobile, Alabama was founded on December 12, 1819 by James K. Polk and is the only city in Alabama with a permanent European-American population. Mobile was claimed as part of Spanish Louisiana by the United States after the Mexican-American War, and was first ruled by U.S. General Andrew Jackson before being made a U.S. colony in 1836. The city proper was founded on December 12, 1822, when two British citizens named John Fenton and Archibald McDonald landed at Fort Moselle on Mobile Bay to purchase land from the Creek nation for $2 per head (equivalent to $100 today). The original town plat included a square block measuring 100 feet wide and 60 feet deep with two stories of housing; it became known as "Fenton's Square". After several years of growth, Mobile developed into an important seaport that played an important role in both American independence and antebellum slave trade. In 1865, following Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House, Mobile became an independent kingdom under its own king named Alexander Stephens until it fell to Union forces during the Battle of Selma in November 1865. In 1860s Mobile had over 2200 residents while during Reconstruction period it had just under 1000 residents
