After several years of economic restructuring and struggles for control over their own government from both white supremacists and black separatists, African American residents in Mobile formed their first Negro municipal government on November 3rd, 1920 under mayor John Grier with voting rights granted to African Americans only two weeks later. In 1971–1972 a severe drought struck central Alabama which led to crop failures; this event helped spur development around town into new neighborhoods that are now some of downtown’s most popular tourist destinations (e.g., Midtown Arts District). A $5 million bond issue approved by voters in 1990 funded extensive repairs/updates includingclairage/new sidewalks/paving streets; also included installation or expansion of water systems throughout much needed areas such as Main Street eastward from US-41 northward; this project was completed between 1998-2001 adding over 350 jobs directly responsible for completing many aspects associated with downtown redevelopment including: new restaurants/bars/cafés along with business parks adjacent thereto; major public works projects such as light rail service through downtown have recently been completed or are soon scheduled to begin operations while preservation efforts continue apace around Historic Downtown (the Cultural District) – onecomponentofDowntownRedevelopment

Mobile, Alabama was founded in 1819 by James K. Polk as the first permanent U.S. settlement on the Gulf of Mexico after President James K. Polk ordered a survey in 1818 to find a new location for the United States north of Mexico City. The town was named for Fort Moultrie, which had been destroyed in a battle with Spanish forces in 1810 and again in 1812; Mobile was not rebuilt until after American forces captured it during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1861, following Confederate victory at Emancipation Proclamation Day, Mobile became part of Confederate Alabama under General Robert E. Lee and later became the capital of Alabama when Montgomery fell to Union troops in 1865. It has since been renamed Birmingham, Alabama.
