The city was founded on December 2, 1819 by Captain John Cushing and his crew of HMS " Cumberland" under the command of Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter. The first post office in Mobile was established on April 17, 1821. On July 6, 1827, it became the first incorporated town in Mobile County when it merged with part of Baldwin City. In 1830, Mobile annexed part of Pensacola from St. Augustine Parish and its name changed to Mobile for all purposes except for municipal purposes which continued to be called Baldwin City until1848 when that annexation also became effective. In 1861 Union General Peebles attacked Fort Sumter and destroyed much equipment within Confederate hands including cannons captured at Fort Pickens on February 14th during what became known as the Battle of Gaines's Mill field campaign – one victory in four days resulting in pro-Union sentiment throughout most of Alabama becoming increasingly opposed to secession until 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered an attack against Union forces at Gettysburg which resulted in over 400 dead and 3 thousand wounded
