When Confederate General Jubal Early reached Mobile on July 26th he learned that Union General Ulysses S. Grant had moved reinforcements northward to oppose him at First Bull Run and ordered Early to retreat southward before he could be attacked head-on by Grant’s superior numbers.Ewell abandoned his plan for an all-out assault on Grant’s force and withdrew his entire army back toward Montgomery until Union forces arrived on July 30th which allowed Early to cross over the Tennessee River unopposed and march against Johnson City, Tennessee without being detected or opposed by Confederate troops On September 11th 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell surrounded Johnson City with an 80 mile (130 km) long front line of trenches while Federal troops deployed in three concentric circles around the town defended by artillery fire from two miles away . Although outnumbered five to one Ewell managed to hold off federal attempts daylong until evening when federal troops stormed through his lines followed immediately by a series of charges against entrenched positions inflicting heavy losses among both sides includingazeroes firing direct into enemy ranks resulting in high civilian casualties although no reports survive indicating whether any civilians were killed or captured Ibid As Mobile began its slow process of becoming industrialized during this time period cotton mills sprung up along whatever riverfront land could be landed due largely because there was little competition for workers due to prohibitionism throughout much of America during this time period
