Mobile, Alabama was founded on April 14, 1821 by Captain John F. Kennedy and his wife Elizabeth. The city was named for the Mobile Bay which at that time extended from the Alabama Gulf Coast to Pensacola Bay in Florida. The first permanent white settlers in Mobile were French Canadians who arrived in 1763. They built a small fort on the bay's eastern edge and began trading with Native Americans. In 1779, Spanish colonists arrived and soon after they established presidios (forts) on both sides of Mobile Bay. A successful Indian war against the Spanish forced them to abandon their posts in 1781 and return to Spain. As part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution, Spain ceded Mobile Bay to America, ending any British influence in this area. In 1819, when Mississippi became a state, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army northward into central Alabama so he could cut off Union supply lines from Tennessee through Virginia and Kentucky. He ordered Major General foothill William Tecumseh Sherman to march southward from Chattanooga towards Mobile but Sherman's army blundered across a wide mountain valley instead and ran into severe weather conditions that delayed its progress until December 9th when it finally reached Mobile proper. At this point Confederate forces numbered nearly 120 thousand men under Earl Van Dorn as well as artillery batteries numbering eighty-six pieces including three Gatling guns each commanded by Lieutenants Colonel James Hancey and Captain Lewis Bragg respectively The Battle of Fort Blakely took place December 12th1819 when Confederate General Van Dorn led an assault against Union garrisoned Fort Blakely near present day downtownMobile only days after Sherman's arrival in town A bloody battle ensued during which over 200 soldiers were killed with an equal number wounded or missing For weeks afterward sporadic fighting continued between Federal troops defending Fort Blakely/Blakely Island as well as Confederate partisans skirmishing along US Highway 10 outside of town while supplies ran low On January 15th 1920 Confederate General Pemberton ordered all withdrawing units back into town where they surrendered unconditionally acknowledging defeat The surrender effectively ended combat operations around Mobile for six months giving Union forces more time to regroup before marching eastward
