The name "Mobile" comes from French and means "place where the moccasin balls are made." Mobile was founded in 1817 by Captain John Marshall as a trading post on the Alabama River between Huntsville and Tuscaloosa. The first permanent white settler in Mobile was David Wilkinson who purchased land east of present-day downtown from the Creek Nation in 1820. Wilkinson's land extended along both banks of the river to what is now known as Washington Street. He named his town after himself and his brother-in-law James Wilkinson (the namesake of Birmingham), who had accompanied him on his purchase trip westward from Tennessee. By 1830, Mobile had a population of about 600 people and functioned primarily as a trading post and base for sales by captains of steamboats operating on the lower Alabama River. In 1834, following Indian Removal Act that ended most Indian presence in Alabama, British settlers arrived in Mobile via ship called "Cary" with refugees from Louisiana and points west seeking new homes after being forced out by U.S. troops under General Andrew Jackson during theiricks War with Mexico earlier that year In 1840,Captain John Sibley established an anchorage just upriver from present day downtown which became known as Sibley's Wharf because he used it to store supplies arriving into town during winter months when navigation was difficult due to ice jams on the river Captain John Hogg also anchored at Sibley's Wharf during this time . In 1845 Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell abandoned Mobile for Gaines' Bay after Confederate Gen Joseph Wheeler fell back there against Union forces commanded by MajorGeneral Shelby Foote After this Battle , all civilian activity within miles of Fort Sumter was stopped until Union reinforcements could arrive During ww2 mobile experienced one bombardment which damaged most buildings within blocks including wharf which led to rechristening it Matthews Bluff after Captains Majestic HMS Cary & Prince Rupert

It fell to Union forces on April 9, 1865.
