They were looking for land where his brother Narvaez had failed to find any new territory after expanding his explorations into Texas some years earlier. Captain Myles reached Mobile Bay on November 25th of that year and set up camp there until December 9th when he marched back across the bay to Pensacola followed by Alvarado who’d explored further north along the Mississippi River Valley before joining him at Pensacola two days later on December 12th (the day after Christmas). From then until 1663 Spanish settlement was limited to what today is downtown Mobile although many smaller grants were issued throughout much of present-day Alabama including parts of Baldwin County as well as Tensas Parish eastward to Baton Rouge (later New Orleans).
