The town played an important role as a supply center for General George Patton's Third Army during their campaign through Germany and into Austria. - The Great Depression - As economic conditions worsened throughout America during the 1930s, millworkers were among those hardest hit by unemployment rates reaching unprecedented levels across much of society at that time. While mills closed throughout southern Alabama due to lack of available employment opportunities, millworkers continued to produce goods for local consumers despite difficult times as they created new businesses and supported their families with cash wages rather than benefit programs like Social Security or Medicare that had become popular then

However, during the late 1800s and into the 1900s, mills became less common and replaced by other means of manufacturing such as textiles and shoes. After World War II, milling gradually declined in popularity until it completely disappeared in Millbrook in the 1970s.
