On October 1, 1865, the Confederate States of America surrendered to Union forces at Appomattox Court House. The surrender led to the death of more than 620,000 soldiers and civilians. Some of these casualties were killed by friendly fire or artillery shelling during the battle for Fort Donelson. Unknown to many people at the time, many CSA soldiers perished from gunshot noise exposure while in captivity. In 1866 a group of Millbrook businessmen organized a shooting club in order to improve shooter safety. At first only men could membership but soon women as well joined in. In 1892 an amendment was passed thatallowed all women over the age of 12 years old to be members. From then on it became known as the "Millbrook Shooting Club". The club has been around since 1865 and continues today as one of Millbrook's most important organizations. It provides shooters with education and protection from shot noise exposure while playing outside or practicing their hobby. In addition, the club helps promote safe gun handling practices for both children and adults alike by hosting educational events throughout the year about firearm safety and hunting techniques. Today, there are over 100 members who participate in shootings at The Mill Brook Shooting Club each year.
