Millbrook was founded in 1836 by John Mill and his wife, Martha. The first town meeting was held on May 5, 1836. It was named for the mill that had been built a few miles away. The first store in Millbrook opened on July 1, 1837. In 1840, the mill burned down, but it was rebuilt and continued to be run until 1907. The first post office in Millbrook was established on October 12, 1839. The town grew rapidly after it became a legal settlement in 1840. By 1850, there were over 40 homes and businesses in the town. In 1861, Union General James Halleck ordered all citizens of Alabama to help build an army during the American Civil War. Many people in Millbrook took up arms and helped build cannons and other equipment for the military. In 1865, when the war ended, most of the residents returned home except for a few who stayed behind to rebuild their homes and businesses. Millbrook began to decline during Reconstruction era because of lack of demand from new immigrants and competition from larger towns nearby. However, it regained some of its former glory during World War II due to its status as an air-raid shelter city during the 1942/43 campaign against Nazi Germany
