Millbrook is a small town in the U.S. state of Alabama, located on the Millbrook River. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of Tuscaloosa County. The first known permanent settler in Millbrook was James Hargrave, who arrived in 1794 with his family from Connecticut. He and his wife died thereabouts before they could build a home and their children moved to nearby Ensley in 1802. In 1824, John Poe founded what would become Park Heights; he also built the first sawmill in Alabama and named it Park Avenue after himself and his wife Charity (Poe) Gadsden. In 1830, two brothers named Jones bought from Hargrave acres of land that lay east of present-day Millbrook on which they erected a log cabin and began to cultivate corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton and other farm crops. They named their new community "Jonesborough" after themselves; it remained an early name for the area until 1913 when it was changed to its current spelling of Millbrook after pioneer miller James Millington Mills (1801-1892). In 1837 one-time slaveholder Elijah Shreve moved his household to what is now Mill Brook Elementary School as part of a plan to emancipate all slaves living within six miles (10 km) of Huntsville proper by 1840. Because most white people lived outside of Mobile County at that time, Shreve's move had little effect on local attitudes or behavior toward African Americans then or later. The town's first school opened September 11th, 1838, taught by Mrs Fannie Auld with nine students plus one tutor/assistant teacher./ Mrs Fannie Auldsdell taught until her death onJanuary 3rd 1886./ At this point schools were open every day except Mondays when none were offered because public works were being done during that week related to road building & maintenance etc.– Dr David Brewster Assistant Superintendent
