Millbrook is a small town in central Alabama. It is located on the east side of Millbrook Lake, about 20 miles southeast of Birmingham and 30 miles northwest of Montgomery. The population was 1,238 at the 2010 census[1]. The history of Millbrook goes back to 1820 when John Wilkinson purchased land in what is now Millbrook from the Creek nation. He built a mill on the stream that emptied into Millstream River. A post office was established in 1826, and by 1840, mills had been erected along the stream. In 1853, George Washington Hardesty donated land to establish a public school inMillbrook. The first school building was completed in 1856 and served as both a day-school and high school until it burned down in 1903. In 1907, an additional school building was constructed; this became known as the Millbrook Elementary School Building. From that time until 1975, it served as the only high school for students in rural central Alabama. In 1950, Hawkins Electric Company moved its headquarters from Mobile to Mill Brook after acquiring a plant there from Gulf South Electric Corporation.[2] Hawkins Electric Company operated two other plants (one near Prattville and one near Decatur) until its closure in 1978[3]. In 2003, United States Steel Corporation relocated its operations out of Central Alabama due to increased competition from foreign steelmakers[4]. However, United States Steel's successor company—Nucor Corporation—continued production at several sites throughout Central Alabama through 2006[5][6], including at Centennial Park Racetrack where race meetings were once held before Nucor shifted production to Mexico City permanently in 2009[7][8].

Millbrook was first settled in 1827 by John Fenton and his family, who were farmers and lumbermen. The community continued to grow until it had a population of about 100 people in 1859. By 1870, the community had shrunk to just 10 people, most of whom lived on the farmsteads that surrounded it. The milltown's fortunes changed after railroad construction began in 1901. Railroads brought new jobs and residents to Millbrook, which also became an important center for cotton production. In 1907, the milltown's only store closed and all residents relocated to nearby Conyers for business purposes. However, due to economic conditions, Millbrook fell into disrepair over time and ceased operation in 1931. Today, few remnants remain of Mill Brook's early days- most notable are the two mills that still stand today.
As one of the most important cotton-growing areas in Alabama, Millbrook was a major center of production during the 1800s. The area also played an important role in the development of Birmingham and other cities in the state.
