Robertson, as a small farmstead on the Cahaba River about one mile (1.6 km) northwest of present-day Millbrook. Robertson named the farm for himself, and Hardin bestowed it on his wife's father-in-law, Isaac Millsaps. In 1857, Hardin donated land to build a dam across the Cahaba River to provide power for a sawmill he had started in nearby Decaturville five years earlier; milling began operation that year underpowered machinery purchased from Thomson & White in Glasgow, Scotland. The mills grew rapidly during the Civil War because of demand from Union troops for flour and other materials needed for war materiel and production of munitions; by 1865 they employed 2,500 workers with a product range including cotton fabrics, shoes, saddles and hats).
