Millbrook is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Millbrook is located on the banks of the Mill Brook River. The community was founded in 1834 by Thomas Mill and his wife Sarah Richardson. At the time it consisted of just six homes and twelve acres (5 hectares) of land. By 1840, it had grown to include eighteen homes and eighty-six acres (30 hectares). In 1892, Mrs. Richardson donated two blocks of land to Millbrook for development as a schoolhouse and cemetery. The first mill in Millbrook was built by George Stephenson in 1835; it operated until 1893. In 1907, James Aitken purchased ninety-eight acres (38 hectares) from pioneer David Hays for $6,000 (). Aitken ran a general store, blacksmith shop, post office and other services until his death in 1966 (). His son John Aitken continued the family business until its sale to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1984 (). Since 2000, much attention has been focused on efforts to revive the historical downtown district including restoration of several buildings dating back to pre-Civil War days (), new construction () and a festival/festive atmosphere every summer called "Festivals at Five Points." Millbrook is a small community located in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1868 by slaves who were brought over from the Deep South to work on the millrace that ran through the town. The millrace still exists and is now used for agricultural purposes. Millbrook lost its status as a township in 1903 and became a village. In 1960, it was combined with other villages in Mobile County to form the new city ofMobile. The first settler in Millbrook was Absalom Purdy, who came over from Virginia in 1827. He built a cabin on the millrace and started farming around it. The mill was built soon after by John Denton, an employee of Purdy's farm. Denton set up the machinery to make flour from corn which he bought from Purdy and his family. By 1830, there were six dwellings in Millbrook, all of which belonged to white people. In 1868, slaves brought over by John Jarratt from Georgia arrived at Millbrook with their families for work on the millrace that ran through town. The slaves had been taken into slavery during the antebellum period when Slavery was legal in Alabama but not common practice because most white people thought it was ILlegitimate behavior. After working on the millrace for several years, some of these slaves decided to move out of town and start their own lives elsewhere. Some of them took their families with them while others left behind their plantations and homes near Baton Rouge or Savannah so they could be free again (Fowler). 1) Slavery ceased to exist legally throughout most ofAlabama southward beginning about 1838 when General James Ewells ordered all open slave states abolished- this included Alabama 2) Many free black people lived adjacent to former plantations until 1861 when Union troops destroyed almost all facilities/houses/buildings within Confederate territory 3) Because cotton production increased rapidly due mostly to late arrival hereabouts & Hispanic immigrants coming thru Mexico -> huge fields lots become available Lots subdivided especially near rivers
