Millbrook is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. Millbrook is part of the Mobile–Ft. Monroe metropolitan area. The name "Millbrook" comes from two old Cherokee words: "miil-kruh" meaning "a mill run by a woman" and "burne" meaning "settlement." It was first settled in 1820 by James Brown and his wife Martha Ann Burnett. Millbrook post office was established in 1825. The local cotton gin began production in 1851 and became one of the largest textile mills on the east coast of America. In 1907, it merged with another textile company, becoming the only Birmingham-based company to be owned and operated by a foreign corporation when it merged with French firm L’Air France duAlabama Limited (L’AFL). At its peak during World War II, Millbrook employed more than 1,000 workers and produced more than 20 million pieces of cloth for American military use. After the war ended, mill operations slowed as technology advances made easier production of other materials such as denim and T-shirts more profitable. However, L’AFL continued to invest in plant modernization and an expansion into new markets including Spain and China until their bankruptcy in 2002 which caused many layoffs at the mill site throughout Alabama; however some employees were able to find new jobs elsewhere within L’AFL or outside America altogether due to its common restructuring practices during that time period known as “restructuring 101." In recent years there has been an effort begun by community members to revive both retail aspects of life such as grocery stores being open late into the night or expanded hours for farmers markets all year long along with increased development nears town center making it easier for pedestrians/cyclists/drivers to get around without coming down Main Street specifically designed for vehicular traffic only days ago bulldozers have been moved back up I-10 just past exit 214 making access much easier if you are coming out of town 100% funded through private donations they say this will help bring tourism back while also helping reduce crime rate now we are waiting on final approval from state government so we can start building our dream house

The mill continued to operate until 1971 when it closed due to low production and competition from other mills in the area. In 1977, the mill site were donated to the University of Alabama for use as an engineering research center. Today, much of the original mill building still stands and is used as a museum by university students and staff.
