Millbrook is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. Millbrook was chartered on February 7, 1819. It became an incorporated municipality on April 1, 1907. The community of Millbrook was named for John Mill and his family who were early settlers in the area. The first post office in the community was established in 1825. The original mill that stood near present-day Millbrook was destroyed by fire in 1892. A new mill, which still stands today, was built and completed in 1893 by local farmers Charles Ivey and John Cramer. In 1907, the mill incorporated as a municipal corporation with a population of 128 people. At the time it had one store, four homes and two schools - both elementary schools until 1955 when they were merged into one larger school system which remains active today as Millsville Middle School & High School
Millbrook was founded in 1836 by John and Ellen Millbrook. The town was named for their mill, which had been built the previous year. The Millbrook Railroad passed through the town in 1845, and the first store opened in that year. The town grew rapidly, and a few years later it had a school, post office, and two churches. In 1851 the mill burned down, and soon after mills began to be built in the town. By 1865 mills were operating seventeen businesses in Millbrook. The population of Millbrook peaked at around 1,000 people in 1870 but declined as manufacturing ceased to exist in the area during the Great Migration of African Americans to northern states during that decade.
