Madison is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,542 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. The first time Madison was mentioned in history was in 1785 when General James Wilkinson and his forces camped there for three weeks while crossing the Mobile River into Alabama from Georgia. At that time, it was part of what is now Etowah County. The town site was chosen by surveyors who visited the area in 1802 and decided it would be an ideal place to build a new courthouse. The first building, a log cabin named "Old Courthouse", was built on North Main Street in 1805 and served as the county courthouse until 1827 when a new brick courthouse replaced it. In 1830, Lieutenant Colonel John Jarrard founded Fort Payne on land he had purchased near present-day Madison to protect settlers moving into Tuscaloosa County from natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods. In 1840, Captain John Sitton established a trading post at Madison which became known as Sitton's Landing later that year; this post lasted until 1845 when it was moved to nearby Decatur because of degradation of the river'sbanks caused by mining operations. When Congress created Alabama Territory in January 1821, Madison became its capital under the name Decatur; however, no buildings were erected there until December 1st when President James Kenedy issued an order creating Tuscaloosa County pursuant to section 5 of Article IV of the Ulysses S Grant–era Constitution (1867). On December 15th Governor George Pickett erected the first public building within our limits: A frame house called "Piano House" on East Main Street; this structure served as court-house and jail during much of our early years undisturbed save for occasional repairs which were made during local holidays or other special occasions (labor days). 2D map of Madison Territory circa 1850 After Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865, all federal troops must leave Union territory including Montgomery but Ala.[1] This order left many black soldiers stationed throughout central Alabama unsupervised due to Federal law prohibiting slavery outside military posts designated by Union generals[2]. Lt Col Reese Witherspoon commanding Company D 11th US Infantry Regiment located about 4 miles NW corner old school house & Cemetery [later homeof Adair Hotel] ordered all black men remaining behind surrendered without any resistance or fight[3][4].
