Madison, Alabama is located in the southeastern United States and is named after James Madison, the first U.S. president. The town was founded by General John Coker in 1819 as a stop on his survey of the region. After completing his survey, Coker laid out streets and erected buildings that remain today such as the building known as “Coke”s Tavern which stands across from current day Stonewall Jackson Park north of downtown Madison. During this time period, development occurred primarily through subsistence farming with many homes being built using adobe orchards which continue to be used today due to their durability when compared to other construction materials available at that time such as brick or concrete. In 1827, when Montgomery became an official county seat following changes within Confederate Alabama following its secession from the Union army during the American Civil War, James Fenton donated land near present day North Avenue for use as a courthouse square with public meetings being held there also. This area served as home to many governmental leaders including both Montgomery mayor Amos Kendall (1847-54) who was responsible for creating state government institutions including courtrooms and jails before becoming governor in 1850 and future Ulysses S Grant (1865-68).
